Anthurium Regale
Anthurium Regale is a spectacular collector Anthurium prized for its massive, velvety heart-shaped leaves and bold silvery-white veining. Young plants are attractive on their own, but the species becomes increasingly dramatic with maturity as each new leaf can emerge significantly larger than the last. The combination of deep green velvet foliage, prominent veins, and impressive mature size makes Anthurium Regale one of the most recognizable velvet-leaf Anthuriums.
The proper botanical name is Anthurium regale, a species native to Peru. Unlike many Anthuriums sold under collector or trade names, Regale is a naturally occurring species rather than a horticultural hybrid. Mature specimens can develop exceptionally large foliage when provided with favorable growing conditions.
Care
Anthurium Regale does best in bright, indirect light. Plenty of filtered light supports strong growth and the development of increasingly large foliage. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the velvety leaves and permanently damage their surface.
Water when the top inch or two of the potting mix begins to dry, then water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain. Anthurium Regale appreciates consistent moisture during active growth and generally prefers not to become completely dry for extended periods. Avoid constantly saturated or waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root problems.
Use a very airy, chunky and well-draining aroid potting mix in a container with excellent drainage. A combination of orchid bark, coco chips or coir, perlite or pumice, and a small amount of moisture-retentive material works well. The root system benefits from consistent access to moisture while still receiving plenty of oxygen.
Anthurium Regale prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Consistent humidity can be particularly beneficial while new leaves are emerging and expanding, as its large developing foliage can be sensitive to dry conditions. Good airflow is important in humid environments and helps prevent moisture from remaining on the velvety leaves.
This Anthurium develops an upright to spreading growth habit and can require considerable space as it matures. Give emerging leaves plenty of room to expand without rubbing against walls, shelving, or neighboring plants. Avoid frequently touching or wiping the velvety foliage, as its surface can be easily marked or damaged.
Pet Safety
Anthurium Regale is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Like other Anthuriums, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation of the mouth, tongue, and lips, along with drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
