Schefflera Amate
Schefflera Amate is a lush tropical houseplant known for its large, glossy green leaflets arranged in distinctive umbrella-like clusters. Its bold foliage creates a full, tropical appearance, and mature plants can develop into impressive indoor trees. With its relatively fast growth and substantial size, Schefflera Amate is an excellent choice for floor displays, offices, entryways, and other spaces that need a larger statement plant.
The plant is commonly sold as Schefflera ‘Amate’, Schefflera Amate, or Umbrella Tree. It is a selected cultivar of Heptapleurum actinophyllum, a species that was long classified as Schefflera actinophylla and is still widely sold under the Schefflera name in the houseplant trade. ‘Amate’ was selected for its especially large, glossy foliage and strong indoor growth.
Care
Schefflera Amate does best in medium to bright, indirect light. Brighter filtered light encourages fuller, stronger growth, although it can adapt to medium-light conditions. Some gentle direct morning sun is usually tolerated, but avoid suddenly exposing the plant to prolonged intense sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.
Water thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil feels dry and allow excess water to drain. Schefflera Amate prefers to dry slightly between waterings and can be sensitive to consistently wet soil. Reduce watering during periods of slower growth.
Use a well-draining, airy potting mix and a pot with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil, perlite or pumice, orchid bark, and coco coir works well and provides a good balance of moisture retention and airflow around the roots.
Schefflera Amate prefers warm temperatures and moderate humidity. It adapts well to normal household humidity but appreciates additional humidity in particularly dry environments. Keep it away from cold drafts, heating vents, and sudden temperature changes.
This plant has an upright, tree-like growth habit and can become quite large indoors with time. Regular pruning can be used to control its height, encourage branching, and create a fuller appearance. Rotating the plant periodically can also help maintain balanced growth as it naturally reaches toward its light source.
Pet Safety
Schefflera Amate is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. It contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals and other compounds that can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep it away from pets and small children.
