Hawaiian Sunshine Footed Fern is a beautiful tropical fern known for its lush, finely divided foliage and distinctive fuzzy rhizomes that creep along the surface of the soil and over the edges of its container. Its bright green fronds create a soft, airy appearance, while the unusual creeping rhizomes add texture and character. With its graceful, spreading growth habit, this fern makes an attractive addition to hanging baskets, shelves, and decorative planters, bringing a touch of tropical greenery to indoor spaces.
Hawaiian Sunshine Footed Fern is a horticultural trade name associated with creeping-rhizome ferns, often sold within the Davallia group, commonly known as Rabbit's Foot Ferns. Exact botanical identification may vary by grower. These tropical ferns are valued for their distinctive surface-growing rhizomes, which should remain exposed rather than being buried beneath the soil.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate medium light conditions. Filtered sunlight encourages healthy, vibrant foliage. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate fronds.
Watering: Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Avoid letting the potting mix dry out completely for extended periods, but do not allow the roots to sit in soggy soil.
Soil: Use a loose, well-draining mix containing peat or coco coir, perlite, and fine orchid bark. The mixture should retain some moisture while providing good airflow. Keep the fuzzy rhizomes on the surface of the soil rather than burying them.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65–80°F and prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally 50–70% or higher. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F. A humidifier can help prevent crispy frond tips in dry indoor environments.
Growth Habit: A spreading, rhizomatous fern that produces delicate, arching fronds from fuzzy, creeping rhizomes. As the plant matures, these rhizomes extend across the soil surface and may trail over the edges of the container, creating its signature footed appearance. Its graceful foliage makes it particularly attractive in hanging baskets and elevated planters.
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs when correctly identified as a Davallia fern. Rabbit's Foot Ferns are commonly regarded as pet-friendly houseplants. However, consuming large amounts of plant material may still cause mild gastrointestinal upset. Because Hawaiian Sunshine is a trade name, confirm the botanical identification for species-specific pet safety.
