ZZ Black is a striking, easy-care houseplant known for its glossy, dark green to nearly black foliage. New growth often emerges bright green before slowly deepening to rich, dark tones as it matures. Its upright shape and bold color make it a great choice for shelves, desks, offices, plant stands, and modern indoor spaces.
The proper botanical name is commonly listed as Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Raven’. It may also be sold as Black ZZ Plant, Raven ZZ, or ZZ Black.
ZZ Black does best in bright, indirect light, but it can tolerate lower light conditions. Brighter filtered light helps support stronger growth. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry and allow water to drain. ZZ Plants store water in their thick stems and rhizomes, so they prefer to dry out fully between waterings. Avoid watering too frequently.
Use a well-draining potting mix and a pot with drainage. A standard houseplant mix with added perlite, pumice, or orchid bark works well.
ZZ Black prefers warm temperatures and average household humidity. Keep it away from cold drafts, heating vents, and air conditioning.
This plant is slow-growing, low-maintenance, and tolerant of a range of indoor conditions. Rotate it occasionally to help it grow evenly toward the light.
ZZ Plants are toxic to pets if ingested. Keep them away from cats, dogs, and small children.
