Pinguicula, also known as Butterwort, is a unique carnivorous plant with soft, sticky leaves that naturally trap small insects. Its rosette-shaped growth and bright green to pink-toned foliage make it a fun and unusual addition to any plant collection. Many varieties also produce delicate blooms, giving you both interesting foliage and beautiful flowers in one plant.
Pinguicula are great for plant lovers who want something a little different, but they do best when given the right care.
Light:
Pinguicula prefer bright, indirect light. A sunny windowsill with filtered light works well. Too much harsh direct sun can burn the leaves, while too little light may cause weak growth or less color.
Water:
Use only distilled water, rainwater, or reverse osmosis water. Tap water often contains minerals that can harm carnivorous plants. Keep the soil lightly moist, but avoid letting the plant sit in deep water for long periods unless you know your specific variety prefers it.
Humidity:
They enjoy moderate to higher humidity, but many varieties can adapt well to normal indoor conditions.
Soil:
Pinguicula need a mineral-free, well-draining carnivorous plant mix. Do not use regular potting soil, fertilizer, or compost. Their roots are sensitive to nutrients and minerals.
Feeding:
They catch small insects on their own. If grown indoors and they are not catching bugs, they can be fed very small insects occasionally. Do not feed them meat or fertilizer.
Temperature:
Most Pinguicula do well in average indoor temperatures. Keep them away from cold drafts, heaters, and extreme temperature swings.
Pet Safety:
Pinguicula are generally considered non-toxic, but they are not meant to be eaten by pets or people. Keep them out of reach if your pets like to chew on plants.
