Portulacaria afra ‘Variegata,’ commonly known as Variegated Elephant Bush or Rainbow Elephant Bush, is a compact succulent known for its small rounded leaves and soft green, cream, and pink-toned variegation. Its branching growth habit gives it a miniature tree-like look, making it a great choice for bright windows, succulent arrangements, bonsai-style containers, and small indoor spaces.
For best growth and color, place Portulacaria afra ‘Variegata’ in very bright light. It does best with bright indirect light to several hours of gentle direct sun. Brighter light can help bring out stronger pink tones in the stems and foliage. Avoid sudden exposure to harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. This plant stores water in its leaves and stems, so it prefers to stay on the drier side. Use a gritty, well-draining cactus or succulent mix and a pot with drainage to help prevent root rot.
