Variegated String of Pearls is a distinctive trailing succulent prized for its round, bead-like leaves patterned in shades of green, creamy white, and pale yellow. Some pearls may also develop soft pink or purple tones when exposed to strong light. Its cascading stems create an unusual waterfall of colorful foliage, making it especially attractive in hanging baskets or containers placed on high shelves.
The proper botanical name is Curio rowleyanus ‘Variegatus’, although it is still frequently sold under the older name Senecio rowleyanus ‘Variegatus’. It is the variegated form of the classic String of Pearls and grows more slowly than the all-green variety because the cream and white portions of its leaves contain less chlorophyll.
Variegated String of Pearls does best in very bright, indirect light with some gentle direct sunlight. Plenty of light is important for maintaining its variegation and compact, full growth. Make sure light reaches the top of the pot as well as the hanging stems, since insufficient light around the crown can cause thinning and bare areas. Avoid suddenly exposing the plant to intense afternoon sun, which can scorch the lighter portions of the pearls.
Allow the potting mix to dry completely or almost completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. The round leaves store moisture and may begin to look slightly less plump when the plant is ready for water. Avoid frequent watering or constantly damp soil, as String of Pearls is particularly susceptible to root and stem rot.
Use a very well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix in a container with drainage. Adding pumice, perlite, lava rock, coarse sand, or other mineral amendments can improve drainage and airflow around the roots. A shallow container can work particularly well because the plant has a relatively modest root system.
Variegated String of Pearls prefers warm temperatures and low to moderate humidity. Typical household conditions are generally suitable. Good airflow is beneficial, particularly around the dense growth at the top of the container.
This succulent develops a trailing growth habit with stems that can eventually cascade several feet when conditions are favorable. Trimming longer stems can encourage branching and fuller growth, and healthy cuttings can be laid across the surface of the potting mix to root and fill in the crown. Under favorable conditions, mature plants may also produce small white flowers with a sweet, spicy fragrance.
Variegated String of Pearls is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Eating the plant can cause digestive irritation, including vomiting and diarrhea, and contact with the sap may cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
