Variegated Ruby Necklace is a colorful trailing succulent known for its small, bean-shaped leaves patterned with green, cream, pink, and purple tones along vibrant reddish-purple stems. In brighter light, the foliage and stems can develop deeper ruby, burgundy, and pink coloring, creating a beautiful cascading display. Its fast-growing trailing habit makes it a great choice for hanging baskets, shelves, windowsills, and succulent collections.
The proper botanical name is commonly listed as Othonna capensis ‘Variegata’. It may also be sold as Variegated Ruby Necklace, Variegated String of Rubies, or under the older name Senecio capensis ‘Variegata’.
Care
Variegated Ruby Necklace does best in very bright light with some direct sun. Several hours of gentle direct sunlight can help maintain its compact growth, strong variegation, and rich ruby coloring. Plants grown in lower light may become greener and more stretched. Introduce the plant gradually to intense direct sun to prevent scorching.
Water thoroughly when the soil has dried completely or almost completely and allow excess water to drain. Its succulent leaves store moisture, making it more tolerant of underwatering than overwatering. Avoid keeping the soil consistently wet, as this can quickly lead to root rot.
Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix and a pot with drainage. Adding perlite, pumice, or other gritty material can improve drainage and provide additional airflow around the roots.
Variegated Ruby Necklace prefers warm temperatures and low to moderate humidity. Normal household humidity works well. Keep it away from freezing temperatures and avoid consistently damp or humid conditions without adequate airflow.
This plant has a fast-growing trailing habit and can develop long cascading stems when grown in a hanging basket or elevated planter. Regular trimming can encourage a fuller appearance, and cuttings are easy to propagate. Small yellow, daisy-like flowers may also appear when the plant is mature and receiving plenty of light.
