Cactus
Cactus plants are unique, low-maintenance houseplants known for their sculptural shapes, thick water-storing stems, and wide variety of sizes and forms. Some grow tall and columnar, while others stay small, round, or clustered. Their bold shape and easy-care nature make them a great choice for sunny windowsills, desks, shelves, plant stands, and bright indoor spaces.
The proper botanical family is Cactaceae. They may be sold simply as Cactus, Desert Cactus, or by their specific variety name.
Care
Cactus plants do best in bright light to direct sun. A sunny window is ideal. Too little light can cause weak, stretched growth.
Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry and allow water to drain. Cacti store water in their stems, so they prefer to dry out fully between waterings. Avoid watering too frequently.
Use a very well-draining cactus or succulent mix and a pot with drainage. Adding pumice, perlite, coarse sand, or small gravel can help improve drainage.
Cactus plants prefer warm temperatures, bright light, and dry conditions. They do not need high humidity and should be kept away from cold drafts, heating vents, and air conditioning.
Most cacti grow slowly indoors and need very little maintenance. Rotate the plant occasionally to help it grow evenly toward the light.
Pet Safety
Pet safety varies by cactus variety. Many cacti are not considered highly toxic, but spines can irritate mouths, paws, skin, or eyes. Keep them away from curious pets and small children.
