Variegated Begonia Cucullata
Variegated Begonia Cucullata is an attractive foliage and flowering Begonia known for its glossy, rounded to heart-shaped leaves patterned with green, cream, white, and sometimes soft pink variegation. The lighter areas can appear as irregular splashes, marbling, or sectors, making each leaf slightly different. In addition to its colorful foliage, established plants can produce clusters of delicate white to pink flowers, giving this Begonia plenty of interest even when grown outside a traditional foliage collection.
The proper botanical name is Begonia cucullata, with variegated plants commonly sold as Begonia cucullata ‘Variegata’ or Variegated Begonia cucullata. Begonia cucullata is a naturally occurring species native to South America and is sometimes called Wax Begonia because of its smooth, somewhat waxy foliage. It has also played an important role in the development of many cultivated wax Begonias.
Care
Variegated Begonia Cucullata does best in bright, indirect light. Because the variegated portions of the leaves contain less chlorophyll, good light helps support healthy growth and maintain strong cream and white coloration. Some gentle morning sunlight can be beneficial, but protect the plant from intense afternoon sun that can scorch the lighter areas of the foliage.
Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. This Begonia prefers relatively consistent moisture while actively growing but should never remain soggy or waterlogged. Avoid allowing it to stay completely dry for extended periods.
Use a light, airy and well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir, perlite or pumice, and fine orchid bark works well. The mix should retain enough moisture to support growth while allowing plenty of oxygen to reach the roots.
Variegated Begonia Cucullata prefers warm temperatures and moderate humidity. It is generally more adaptable to typical household conditions than some of the more humidity-sensitive collector Begonias. Good airflow is beneficial, and the plant should be protected from cold drafts and prolonged chilly temperatures.
This Begonia develops a bushy, upright and branching growth habit and can become fuller with occasional pruning or pinching. Remove spent flowers and damaged leaves as needed to keep the plant tidy. Because variegation can vary between stems, completely green shoots can be pruned if they begin to dominate and maintaining the variegated appearance is desired.
Pet Safety
Variegated Begonia Cucullata is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Begonias contain soluble oxalates that can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract, with the highest concentrations generally found in the underground portions of the plant. Keep it away from pets that are likely to chew on plants.
