Alocasia Azlanii is a striking jewel Alocasia prized for its glossy, metallic foliage with deep green, purple, burgundy, and bronze tones accented by vivid pink to reddish-purple veins. The leaves can appear almost iridescent as the light changes, giving the plant a dramatically different appearance depending on the viewing angle. Its relatively compact size and intensely colored foliage make it particularly appealing for smaller spaces and collector displays.
The proper botanical name is Alocasia azlanii. It is a naturally occurring species native to Brunei on the island of Borneo, where it grows in warm, humid tropical conditions. It belongs to the group commonly referred to as Jewel Alocasias, which are generally appreciated for their compact growth and exceptionally ornamental foliage.
Alocasia Azlanii does best in bright, indirect light. Good filtered light helps support healthy growth and brings out the metallic coloration of the foliage. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Water when the top inch of the potting mix begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Azlanii prefers more consistent moisture than drought-tolerant houseplants, but its roots and corm are susceptible to rot if kept constantly wet. Avoid allowing the potting mix to become completely dry for extended periods.
Use a chunky, airy and well-draining aroid potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing coco coir or quality houseplant soil, orchid bark, perlite or pumice, and other coarse amendments works well. The goal is to retain some moisture while maintaining excellent airflow around the roots.
Alocasia Azlanii prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. It particularly appreciates higher humidity than many common houseplants, although good airflow remains
