Alocasia brancifolia is an unusual tropical Alocasia prized for its deeply divided, highly sculptural green foliage. Unlike the broad shield-shaped leaves associated with many Alocasias, its leaves develop numerous narrow lobes that create a dramatic, almost fern-like appearance. Long patterned petioles add even more visual interest, giving the plant a distinctly exotic look as it matures.
The proper botanical name is Alocasia brancifolia, a naturally occurring species native to New Guinea. It is sometimes called the Fern Leaf Alocasia because of its deeply divided foliage. The species name may occasionally be misspelled as “brancifolia” or confused with similarly lobed Alocasias, so botanical identification is useful when purchasing collector specimens.
Alocasia brancifolia does best in bright, indirect light. Good filtered light encourages strong growth and helps the plant develop its characteristic deeply divided foliage. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Water when the top inch or two of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. This Alocasia appreciates relatively consistent moisture during active growth but should never remain waterlogged. Allowing some drying between waterings helps reduce the risk of root and corm rot.
Use a chunky, airy, and well-draining aroid mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir with orchid bark, perlite, pumice, and other coarse amendments works well. The mix should retain some moisture while still providing plenty of oxygen around the roots.
Alocasia brancifolia prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Higher hu
