Alocasia Mickey Mouse
Alocasia Mickey Mouse is a unique tropical houseplant known for its large, dramatically shaped green leaves splashed with creamy white to pale yellow variegation. The unusual lobed foliage is often compared to the silhouette of Mickey Mouse ears, giving the plant its playful common name. Each leaf develops a different variegation pattern, making it an eye-catching choice for collectors, plant stands, and bright indoor spaces.
Despite its common name, Alocasia Mickey Mouse is not actually an Alocasia. The proper botanical name is Xanthosoma sagittifolium ‘Variegatum’, though it is widely sold as Alocasia ‘Mickey Mouse’, Xanthosoma Mickey Mouse, or Variegated Mickey Mouse Taro. It belongs to the same Araceae family as Alocasia, which explains their similar appearance.
Care
Alocasia Mickey Mouse does best in bright, indirect light. Plenty of filtered light helps maintain its cream and yellow variegation and encourages healthy growth. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the lighter portions of the leaves.
Water thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil feels dry and allow excess water to drain. This plant prefers lightly and consistently moist soil during active growth but should not remain soggy. Avoid allowing it to dry completely for extended periods.
Use a well-draining, chunky potting mix and a pot with drainage. A mixture containing houseplant soil, orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir works well, providing moisture retention while allowing plenty of airflow around the roots.
Alocasia Mickey Mouse prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Higher humidity can encourage larger, healthier foliage and help prevent crispy edges on the variegated portions of the leaves. Keep it away from cold drafts, heating vents, and air conditioning.
This plant has an upright, clumping growth habit and can develop impressively large foliage as it matures. It may also produce offsets from underground corms, gradually creating a fuller plant. Growth can slow considerably during cooler months, so reduce watering if the plant becomes less active.
Pet Safety
Alocasia Mickey Mouse is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Like other members of the Araceae family, Xanthosoma contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract. Keep it away from pets and small children.
