Anthurium crystallinum ‘Silver Blush’ is a striking velvet-leaf Anthurium prized for its dramatic silver coloration. Its heart-shaped leaves emerge with a soft velvety texture and develop broad silvery markings that radiate along the veins and can cover much of the leaf surface. The combination of deep green undertones, luminous silver patterning, and prominent venation gives each leaf an almost metallic appearance.
Commonly sold as Anthurium crystallinum ‘Silver Blush’, this plant is a selected form of Anthurium crystallinum, a tropical aroid native to Central and South America. Compared with a typical crystallinum, Silver Blush is grown for its much heavier silver coloration, which extends beyond the main veins and creates a broader frosted or brushed-silver appearance.
Anthurium crystallinum ‘Silver Blush’ does best in bright, indirect light. Plenty of filtered light encourages strong growth and helps showcase its silver foliage, but prolonged direct sunlight can scorch the velvety leaves. Avoid placing it against hot, sunny glass.
Water when the top 1–2 inches of the potting mix begin to dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Keep the plant relatively consistent rather than allowing it to remain extremely dry for long periods. Avoid constantly wet soil, which can lead to root problems.
Use a chunky, airy, and fast-draining aroid mix. Orchid bark, coco chips or coir, perlite, pumice, and a small amount of moisture-retentive organic material work well. Good airflow around the roots is particularly important for velvet-leaf Anthuriums.
Silver Blush prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Higher humidity can help developing leaves expand properly and maintain attractive foliage, but good airflow is equally important. Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
This Anthurium develops an upright, self-heading growth habit, with new leaves gradually increasing in size under favorable conditions. Give expanding leaves enough room to develop without rubbing against surrounding plants or surfaces, as the velvety foliage can be easily damaged. Mature plants may also produce typical Anthurium inflorescences consisting of a spadix and spathe.
Anthurium crystallinum ‘Silver Blush’ is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested. Like other Anthuriums, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause intense irritation of the mouth, tongue, and throat, along with drooling, pawing at the mouth, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
