Anthurium Dressleri Dark Velvet
Anthurium Dressleri Dark Velvet is a highly sought-after collector Anthurium prized for its deep, velvety foliage, prominent veining, and dramatic heart-shaped leaves. Mature leaves develop rich dark-green coloration that can appear nearly black under certain lighting, creating a striking contrast against the lighter veins. New foliage may emerge in warmer bronze, reddish, or olive tones before gradually darkening as it hardens.
The proper botanical name is Anthurium dressleri, a rare Anthurium species native to Panama. “Dark Velvet” is a horticultural or collector designation used for plants selected for especially dark foliage rather than a formally recognized botanical variety. Individual plants can naturally vary in leaf shape, darkness, and vein pattern.
Care
Anthurium Dressleri Dark Velvet does best in bright, indirect light. Plenty of filtered light supports strong growth and healthy foliage while allowing the leaves to develop their characteristic deep coloration. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate velvety surface.
Water when the top inch or two of the potting mix begins to dry, then water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain. Anthurium Dressleri appreciates consistent moisture and generally prefers not to remain completely dry for extended periods. Avoid constantly wet or waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.
Use a very airy, chunky and well-draining aroid potting mix in a container with excellent drainage. Orchid bark, coco chips or coir, perlite or pumice, and a small amount of moisture-retentive material provide a good balance of moisture and oxygen around the roots.
Anthurium Dressleri Dark Velvet prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Consistently higher humidity can be particularly beneficial while new leaves are emerging and expanding. Good airflow is important in humid environments and helps prevent moisture from remaining on the velvety foliage.
This Anthurium develops an upright to spreading growth habit, producing increasingly substantial foliage as it matures. Give emerging leaves plenty of space to expand without rubbing against surrounding plants or surfaces. Avoid frequently touching or wiping the leaves, as the velvet surface can be easily marked or damaged.
Pet Safety
Anthurium Dressleri Dark Velvet is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Like other Anthuriums, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation of the mouth, tongue, and lips, along with drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
