Begonia Dark Mambo is a dramatic foliage houseplant prized for its deep burgundy to nearly black leaves, velvety appearance, and beautifully textured surfaces. Its richly colored foliage creates a striking contrast against lighter green houseplants, making it an excellent choice for shelves, tabletops, decorative planters, and specialty Begonia collections. Under the right lighting, the leaves may reveal subtle reddish-purple and bronze undertones that add even more depth to their dark appearance.
The proper horticultural name is Begonia ‘Dark Mambo’, a cultivated Rex Begonia variety grown primarily for its ornamental foliage. It is especially recognized for its exceptionally dark leaves, which can appear almost black under certain lighting conditions. Like other Rex Begonias, it belongs to the Begonia rex-cultorum group, which includes many of the colorful, patterned, and textured foliage Begonias commonly grown indoors.
Begonia Dark Mambo does best in bright, indirect light. Good filtered light helps maintain its rich, dark foliage coloration while encouraging healthy, compact growth. It can tolerate medium light, although growth may slow in darker conditions. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Begonia Dark Mambo appreciates consistent moisture during active growth but should never remain soggy or waterlogged. Avoid allowing the potting mix to dry completely for extended periods, as this can cause wilting and crispy leaf edges.
Use a light, airy, and well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir, perlite or pumice, and fine orchid bark works well. The roots appreciate a balance of moisture retention and good airflow.
Begonia Dark Mambo prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Additional humidity can help maintain healthy foliage and prevent crispy leaf edges, particularly in dry indoor environments. Good airflow is important, and water should not be allowed to remain on the leaves for extended periods. Protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
This Begonia develops a compact, mounding to spreading growth habit, with its dark, textured leaves emerging from rhizomes near the soil surface. Mature plants can gradually spread to form a dense display of richly colored foliage, making them especially attractive in decorative containers.
Under favorable conditions, Begonia Dark Mambo may produce small clusters of delicate pink flowers, although its dramatic foliage remains the primary attraction. Remove damaged or aging leaves as needed to maintain a tidy appearance. Established plants can also be propagated through leaf cuttings or rhizome division.
Begonia Dark Mambo is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates, with higher concentrations generally found in their underground portions. Ingestion can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract, drooling, and vomiting. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
