Begonia Dragon’s Tail is an unusual foliage Begonia known for its deeply divided, jagged green leaves that create a dramatic dragon-like or reptilian appearance. The elongated lobes and irregular leaf shape give the plant a bold, exotic look that stands apart from more traditional rounded or heart-shaped Begonias. Its distinctive foliage and collector appeal make it an excellent choice for plant cabinets, terrariums, shelves, and other bright indoor displays.
The plant is commonly sold as Begonia ‘Dragon’s Tail’ or Dragon Tail Begonia. The name is primarily used as a horticultural or collector trade name for its distinctive foliage, and labeling can vary between growers. It should not be confused with other unrelated houseplants that are also sold under the common name “Dragon Tail.”
Care
Begonia Dragon’s Tail does best in bright, indirect light. Good filtered light encourages compact growth and healthy foliage. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and cause crispy or faded areas.
Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. This Begonia prefers consistent moisture during active growth but should never remain soggy or waterlogged. Avoid allowing the soil to stay completely dry for extended periods.
Use a light, airy and well-draining potting mix in a pot with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir, fine orchid bark, and perlite or pumice works well. The goal is to retain some moisture while still providing plenty of airflow around the roots.
Begonia Dragon’s Tail prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Additional humidity can help maintain healthy foliage, particularly while new leaves are developing. Good airflow is important in higher-humidity conditions, and the foliage should not remain constantly wet. Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
This plant has a bushy to spreading growth habit and is grown primarily for its unusual foliage. Regularly removing older or damaged leaves can help maintain its appearance and encourage healthy new growth. Avoid excessive handling of new foliage, as developing Begonia leaves can be delicate.
Pet Safety
Begonia Dragon’s Tail is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates that can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract, with the highest concentrations generally found in the underground portions of the plant. Keep it away from pets and small children.
