Begonia Witch's Cloak is a dramatic foliage Begonia prized for its deep, moody coloration, richly textured leaves, and mysterious appearance. Its ornamental foliage features dark shades of burgundy, bronze, deep green, and nearly black, often accented by subtle metallic highlights that become more noticeable under filtered light. With its striking colors and unusual leaf patterns, this Begonia is an excellent choice for shelves, decorative planters, and specialty plant collections.
Commonly sold as Begonia ‘Witch's Cloak’, this cultivated ornamental Begonia is grown primarily for its distinctive foliage. Its dark coloration gives it a dramatic appearance, making it especially appealing to collectors of unusual and richly colored Begonias. Individual leaves may display variations in color and pattern depending on maturity, lighting, and growing conditions.
Begonia Witch's Cloak does best in bright, indirect light. Good filtered light helps maintain its rich foliage coloration and encourages healthy, compact growth. It can tolerate medium light, although growth may slow and its coloring may become less pronounced. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. This Begonia appreciates consistent moisture during active growth but should never remain soggy or waterlogged. Avoid allowing the potting mix to dry completely for extended periods, as this can lead to wilting and crispy leaf edges.
Use a light, airy, and well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A combination of quality houseplant soil or coco coir, perlite or pumice, and fine orchid bark works well. The roots appreciate good airflow and a balance of moisture retention and drainage.
Begonia Witch's Cloak prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Additional humidity can help maintain healthy foliage, particularly in dry indoor environments. Good airflow is important, and water should not be allowed to remain on the leaves for extended periods. Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
This Begonia generally develops a compact, bushy to spreading growth habit, making it suitable for smaller containers and indoor displays. Its dramatic foliage is the main attraction, although established plants may produce small, delicate flowers under favorable conditions.
Remove damaged or aging leaves as needed to maintain a tidy appearance. Depending on its growth habit, Begonia Witch's Cloak may be propagated through stem or leaf cuttings.
Begonia Witch's Cloak is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates, with higher concentrations generally found in their underground portions. Ingestion can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
