Blue Oil Fern
Blue Oil Fern is a rare tropical fern known for its iridescent blue-green leaves and glossy, almost metallic sheen. Its strap-like fronds make it a standout plant for collectors, terrariums, shaded shelves, and humid plant cabinets.
The proper botanical name is Microsorum thailandicum. It is native to shaded, humid areas of Southeast Asia and naturally grows as an epiphytic or lithophytic fern, meaning it can grow on trees or rocks rather than traditional soil.
Care
Blue Oil Fern does best in medium to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can damage the leaves. The blue sheen often shows best in lower to moderate filtered light.
Keep the soil evenly moist, but not soggy. Do not let it dry out completely for long periods. This fern appreciates consistent moisture and good airflow around the roots.
Use a well-draining, airy mix rich in organic matter. A good mix could include houseplant soil, orchid bark, perlite, and a little sphagnum moss. Since it naturally grows on rocks and trees, the roots prefer moisture without being packed into heavy soil.
Blue Oil Fern prefers high humidity, ideally above 50%. It does especially well in terrariums, cabinets, or humid rooms. Keep it away from cold drafts, dry vents, and temperatures below about 60°F.
