Boobie Cactus is a quirky and highly sought-after cactus known for its unusual, rounded protrusions that develop along its upright, blue-green stems. These distinctive bumps give the plant its playful common name and create a sculptural, almost otherworldly appearance. Its powdery blue coloration, unique texture, and architectural growth habit make it a standout addition to succulent collections, sunny windowsills, and desert-inspired displays. With its slow growth and relatively easy care, Boobie Cactus is a fascinating choice for collectors looking for something truly different.
Botanically known as Myrtillocactus geometrizans 'Fukurokuryuzinboku', this unusual cultivar is a mutated form of the Blue Myrtle Cactus, a species native to Mexico. Its distinctive rounded growths develop along the ribs of the stems, giving each plant a unique appearance. The cultivar name is also sometimes spelled 'Fukurokuryujinboku' in horticultural trade.
Light: Prefers bright light with several hours of direct sunlight daily. Indoors, place near a sunny south- or west-facing window. Gradually acclimate the plant to stronger sunlight to prevent sunburn, especially during hot summer afternoons.
Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Reduce watering significantly during winter when growth slows. Overwatering is one of the most common causes of root rot.
Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix amended with pumice, perlite, or coarse mineral grit. Excellent drainage is essential for maintaining healthy roots and preventing excess moisture buildup.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65–90°F and prefers low humidity with good airflow. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 40°F. Avoid consistently damp or humid conditions.
Growth Habit: A slow-growing, upright columnar cactus that develops distinctive rounded protrusions along its blue-green stems. As it matures, it may produce additional branches, creating an increasingly sculptural appearance. Each plant develops its own unique pattern of bumps, making every specimen one of a kind. Its powdery blue coating should be handled gently to preserve its natural coloration.
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, although species-specific toxicity information is limited. Boobie Cactus has small spines that can cause physical injury, and chewing on the plant may result in gastrointestinal upset. Keep out of reach of curious pets.
