Columnea Mona Lisa
Columnea Mona Lisa is a beautiful tropical trailing plant known for its glossy green foliage and bright orange-red tubular flowers. The unusual blooms emerge along cascading stems and resemble small leaping goldfish, giving plants in this group their popular common name, Goldfish Plant. Its combination of attractive foliage, colorful flowers, and long trailing stems makes it an excellent choice for hanging baskets, shelves, plant stands, and bright indoor spaces.
The plant is commonly sold as Columnea ‘Mona Lisa’ or Columnea Mona Lisa. Columnea belongs to the Gesneriaceae family, making it a relative of African Violets and Episcia. Mona Lisa is a cultivated variety selected for its attractive trailing growth and showy flowers.
Care
Columnea Mona Lisa does best in bright, indirect light. Plenty of filtered light encourages compact growth and helps promote flowering. It can tolerate medium light, but blooming may be reduced. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.
Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Columnea prefers lightly and consistently moist soil during active growth but should never remain soggy or waterlogged. Avoid allowing the plant to stay completely dry for extended periods.
Use a light, airy and well-draining potting mix in a pot with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir, perlite, and fine orchid bark works well. A loose African Violet-style mix can also work well because it provides moisture retention without becoming overly dense.
Columnea Mona Lisa prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Consistent warmth and additional humidity can encourage lush growth and healthy flowering. Good airflow is important when humidity is high, and the plant should be protected from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
This plant has a trailing and cascading growth habit and is especially well suited for hanging baskets or elevated shelves. Pinching or lightly pruning longer stems can encourage branching and create a fuller plant. Under favorable conditions, established plants can produce multiple flushes of colorful flowers throughout the year.
Pet Safety
Columnea Mona Lisa is generally considered pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs. As with any houseplant, eating large amounts of plant material may still cause mild digestive upset, so it is best to discourage pets from chewing on the foliage or flowers.
