Cyrtosperma Johnstonii is a rare tropical aroid known for its large arrow-shaped leaves, bold petioles, and dramatic upright growth. Young plants can show beautiful red or burgundy tones on the undersides of the leaves, while mature plants develop a strong, statement look for collectors, plant rooms, and bright indoor spaces.
The proper botanical name is Cyrtosperma johnstonii. It may sometimes be sold under the older name Alocasia johnstonii, but that name is considered a synonym.
Cyrtosperma Johnstonii does best in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate medium light, but brighter filtered light helps support stronger growth and larger leaves. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the foliage.
Water thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil feels dry and allow water to drain. Cyrtosperma prefer consistent moisture, but they should not sit in stagnant water or heavy, soggy soil.
Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive potting mix and a pot with drainage. A mix with houseplant soil, coco coir, perlite, orchid bark, and a little sphagnum moss works well.
Cyrtosperma Johnstonii prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Higher humidity can help support larger, healthier leaves. Keep it away from cold drafts, heating vents, and air conditioning.
This plant can become large as it matures. Give it room to grow, stable conditions, and avoid letting it dry out completely for long periods.
Cyrtosperma Johnstonii is part of the aroid family and is considered toxic to pets if ingested. Keep it away from cats, dogs, and small children.
