Dischidia nummularia 'Pangolin Kisses' is a charming tropical trailing plant known for its small, rounded leaves that grow closely along delicate, cascading stems. Its thick, succulent-like foliage creates a beautiful overlapping pattern reminiscent of tiny scales, giving this unusual plant its playful name. With its soft green coloration, compact leaves, and graceful trailing growth habit, 'Pangolin Kisses' makes an excellent choice for hanging baskets, elevated shelves, and decorative planters. Its distinctive appearance and relatively low-maintenance nature make it a wonderful addition to any unique houseplant collection.
Botanically known as Dischidia nummularia, this species is commonly called String of Nickels and belongs to the Apocynaceae family, making it a relative of Hoya. 'Pangolin Kisses' is a horticultural trade name associated with its distinctive, tightly arranged foliage. Native to tropical regions of Asia and the Pacific, this epiphytic plant naturally grows attached to trees, where its trailing stems spread across bark and branches.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage healthy, compact growth. Gentle morning sunlight is beneficial, but prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun can scorch or discolor the leaves. Insufficient light may result in slower growth and increased spacing between leaves.
Watering: Allow the growing medium to dry partially between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Its thick, succulent-like leaves store some moisture, making it somewhat tolerant of occasional underwatering. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet, as this can lead to root rot.
Soil: Use a loose, fast-draining epiphytic mix containing orchid bark, perlite, coco chips, and a small amount of quality potting soil. Excellent airflow around the roots is essential. Dischidia can also be grown mounted on cork bark or other suitable surfaces when provided with adequate humidity.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65–85°F and appreciates moderate to high humidity, ideally 50–70%. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F. Good airflow is especially important in humid environments.
Growth Habit: A trailing, epiphytic tropical plant that produces slender stems lined with small, rounded, overlapping leaves. Its cascading vines can grow several feet long under favorable conditions, making it particularly attractive in hanging baskets and elevated planters. Mature plants may produce tiny, delicate flowers along the stems. Occasional trimming encourages branching and a fuller appearance.
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, although species-specific toxicity information is limited. Dischidia nummularia is not widely recognized as a toxic houseplant, but its safety has not been as extensively documented as some other pet-friendly species. Ingesting plant material may still cause mild gastrointestinal upset, so it is best to keep this plant away from pets that frequently chew on foliage.
