Episcia Strawberry Fields
Episcia Strawberry Fields is a colorful tropical houseplant known for its soft, velvety foliage with beautiful shades of pink, copper, green, and silver. The textured leaves can develop an almost metallic sheen, while the plant may also produce bright, tubular flowers that contrast beautifully against its patterned foliage. Its combination of colorful leaves, flowers, and trailing growth makes it an excellent choice for hanging baskets, shelves, terrariums, and plant cabinets.
The plant is commonly sold as Episcia cupreata ‘Strawberry Fields’ or simply Episcia ‘Strawberry Fields’. Episcia are commonly called Flame Violets and belong to the Gesneriaceae family, making them relatives of African Violets. Despite the common name, they are not true violets. Strawberry Fields is grown primarily for its colorful foliage but can also flower repeatedly when provided with favorable growing conditions.
Care
Episcia Strawberry Fields does best in medium to bright, indirect light. Good filtered light helps maintain its strongest pink, copper, and metallic foliage coloration and encourages flowering. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch or fade the delicate leaves.
Water when the top layer of soil begins to feel slightly dry, keeping the potting mix lightly and consistently moist during active growth. Episcia do not like remaining soggy, but they also prefer not to dry completely for extended periods. Watering around the base of the plant or from below can help keep the velvety foliage dry.
Use a light, airy and moisture-retentive potting mix in a pot with good drainage. A mixture similar to an African Violet mix works well, or use quality houseplant soil or coco coir amended with plenty of perlite and a small amount of fine orchid bark.
Episcia Strawberry Fields prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Consistent warmth and additional humidity encourage lush foliage and vigorous growth, making this plant particularly well suited for plant cabinets and terrariums. Good airflow is still important when humidity is high, and avoid allowing water to remain on the leaves for extended periods.
This plant has a creeping and trailing growth habit and naturally produces stolons, or runners, that develop new plantlets. These runners can be allowed to cascade from the container or rooted back into the pot to create a fuller plant. Pinching longer stems can also encourage denser, more compact growth.
Pet Safety
Episcia Strawberry Fields is generally considered pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs. As with any houseplant, eating large amounts of foliage may still cause mild digestive upset, so it is best to discourage pets from chewing on the plant.
