Myrtillocactus geometrizans 'Cresta' is a fascinating and sculptural cactus known for its unusual, fan-shaped growth and beautiful blue-green coloration. Unlike traditional upright cacti, this crested variety develops dramatic, twisting ridges and wavy formations that create a one-of-a-kind appearance. Its powdery blue surface, subtle spines, and unpredictable growth patterns make it a standout addition to succulent collections, sunny windowsills, and desert-inspired displays.
Botanically known as Myrtillocactus geometrizans f. cristatus, this plant is a crested form of the Blue Myrtle Cactus, a species native to Mexico. Its distinctive appearance results from a growth mutation called fasciation, which causes the growing point to develop in an elongated, ribbon-like pattern rather than a typical upright stem. Each plant develops its own unique shape as it matures.
Light: Prefers bright light with several hours of direct sunlight daily. Indoors, place near a sunny south- or west-facing window. Gradually acclimate the plant to stronger sunlight to prevent sunburn, especially during hot summer afternoons.
Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Reduce watering significantly during winter when growth slows. Overwatering can quickly lead to root rot.
Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix amended with pumice, perlite, or coarse mineral grit. Excellent drainage is essential for maintaining healthy roots.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65–90°F and prefers low humidity with good airflow. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 40°F. Avoid consistently damp or humid conditions.
Growth Habit: A slow-growing, crested cactus that develops intricate, fan-shaped ridges and twisting blue-green stems. Its unusual growth pattern makes every specimen unique. Some plants may occasionally produce upright, non-crested shoots, which can be removed if you prefer to maintain the crested appearance.
Myrtillocactus geometrizans is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, although species-specific toxicity information is limited. Its spines can cause physical injury, and chewing on the plant may result in gastrointestinal upset. Keep out of reach of curious pets.
