Hoya chinghungensis is a charming miniature tropical vine prized for its tiny, rounded to oval leaves and delicate trailing growth habit. Its small, slightly succulent green foliage grows along slender stems, creating a soft, cascading appearance that looks beautiful in hanging baskets, small planters, and terrariums. Despite its petite size, this unique Hoya can produce clusters of tiny, star-shaped flowers that add even more character to its already adorable appearance. Its compact foliage and graceful growth make it an excellent choice for collectors who appreciate unusual and miniature Hoyas.
Botanically known as Hoya chinghungensis, this species belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is native to parts of Southeast Asia, including Vietnam and southern China. Unlike larger-leaved Hoyas, this species is especially valued for its naturally miniature foliage and delicate stems. Under favorable conditions, mature plants may produce small, pale yellow to creamy flowers with contrasting centers.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage healthy, compact growth. Gentle morning sunlight can be beneficial, while prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun may scorch its delicate leaves. Adequate light can also encourage flowering in mature plants.
Watering: Allow the surface of the growing medium to dry slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Because of its small leaves and fine root system, Hoya chinghungensis appreciates more consistent moisture than many thick-leaved Hoyas. Avoid allowing the soil to remain soggy or dry out completely for extended periods.
Soil: Use a fine, airy, well-draining Hoya mix containing small orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, and a small amount of quality potting soil. The mixture should retain some moisture while providing excellent airflow around the roots.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65–80°F and appreciates moderate to high humidity, ideally 60–80%. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F. Good airflow helps maintain healthy foliage and prevents excess moisture buildup.
Growth Habit: A miniature trailing or climbing tropical vine that produces tiny, rounded to oval leaves along thin, flexible stems. Its compact size makes it ideal for small hanging baskets, terrariums, and decorative planters. Mature plants may produce clusters of delicate, star-shaped flowers. Avoid removing old flower spurs, as Hoyas can bloom repeatedly from the same structures.
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Hoyas are widely regarded as pet-friendly houseplants, although species-specific toxicity information for Hoya chinghungensis is limited. Consuming large amounts of plant material may still cause mild gastrointestinal upset, so it is best to discourage pets from chewing on the foliage.
