Hoya Kerrii Speckles
Hoya Kerrii Speckles is a distinctive Hoya prized for its thick, heart-shaped leaves decorated with irregular silver flecks and speckling. The fleshy green foliage gives the plant its familiar sweetheart appearance, while the scattered silver markings make each leaf slightly different. As a mature plant, it develops long climbing or trailing vines and can eventually produce clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers.
The proper botanical name is Hoya kerrii, with speckled plants commonly sold as Hoya kerrii ‘Speckles,’ Hoya kerrii Splash, or Hoya kerrii Silver Splash. “Speckles” or “Splash” generally describes the silver markings on the foliage rather than a separate species. Hoya kerrii is native to parts of Southeast Asia and is also commonly known as the Sweetheart Hoya, Valentine Hoya, or Heart Leaf Hoya.
Care
Hoya Kerrii Speckles does best in bright, indirect light and can benefit from some gentle morning or late-afternoon direct sunlight. Good light encourages healthy, compact growth and can improve the plant’s chances of flowering. Avoid suddenly exposing the foliage to intense direct sunlight, which can cause scorching.
Allow the upper portion of the potting mix to dry thoroughly between waterings, then water deeply and allow all excess water to drain. Its thick, succulent-like leaves store moisture, so Hoya Kerrii generally tolerates some dryness better than constantly wet conditions. Avoid keeping the roots soggy or waterlogged.
Use a chunky, airy and well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing orchid bark, perlite or pumice, and coco coir or quality houseplant soil works well. Excellent drainage and airflow around the roots are particularly important for preventing rot.
Hoya Kerrii Speckles prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. It adapts to average household humidity, although additional humidity can support healthy new growth. Good airflow is beneficial, particularly in more humid environments.
This Hoya develops a climbing and vining growth habit, although it can be surprisingly slow to establish. Once actively growing, its vines can become quite long and benefit from a trellis or other support. Mature plants can produce rounded clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers. Avoid removing the flower peduncles after blooming because Hoyas can flower repeatedly from the same structures.
Single heart-shaped Hoya Kerrii leaves are sometimes sold as novelty plants. A single rooted leaf without a piece of stem containing a viable node may remain alive for a long time but usually cannot develop into a full vine. A complete plant requires viable stem and node tissue capable of producing new growth.
Pet Safety
Hoya Kerrii Speckles is generally considered pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs. As with any houseplant, consuming large amounts of plant material may still cause mild digestive upset, so discouraging pets from chewing on the foliage is recommended.
