Hoya Latifolia Macrophylla Albomarginata is a striking variegated Hoya known for its large, thick, heavily textured green leaves edged in creamy white to pale yellow variegation. The contrasting outer margins highlight the plant’s prominent veining and rippled leaf texture, giving it a bold appearance even when it is not flowering. Its impressive foliage and climbing growth habit make it a beautiful choice for Hoya collectors, trellises, and bright indoor spaces.
The proper botanical name is commonly listed as Hoya latifolia ‘Albomarginata’. It is also widely sold under the older name Hoya macrophylla ‘Albomarginata’ or Hoya macrophylla Variegata. Hoya macrophylla is now considered a synonym of Hoya latifolia, although the older name remains very common in the houseplant trade. Albomarginata refers to the plant’s distinctive light-colored variegation along the outer margins of the leaves.
Care
Hoya Latifolia Macrophylla Albomarginata does best in bright, indirect light. Plenty of filtered light helps maintain strong variegation and encourages healthy growth and flowering. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the cream-colored portions of the leaves.
Water thoroughly when the top portion of the potting mix has dried and allow excess water to drain completely. Its thick leaves store some moisture, so it prefers to dry slightly between waterings rather than remaining consistently wet. Avoid soggy soil, which can lead to root rot.
Use a chunky, well-draining potting mix and a pot with drainage. A mixture containing orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, and a small amount of houseplant soil works well and provides plenty of airflow around the roots.
Hoya Latifolia Macrophylla Albomarginata prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. It can adapt to average household humidity but appreciates additional humidity, especially while producing new leaves. Keep it away from cold drafts, heating vents, and sudden temperature changes.
This Hoya has a climbing and vining growth habit and benefits from a sturdy trellis or other support. Its large leaves can become quite substantial as the plant matures. Mature plants may also produce clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers. Avoid removing old flower spurs, or peduncles, because Hoyas can bloom repeatedly from the same growth points.
Pet Safety
Hoyas are generally considered pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs. Hoya Latifolia Macrophylla Albomarginata is considered a good choice for homes with pets, although consuming large amounts of any plant material may still cause mild stomach upset.
