Hoya latifolia 'Silver' is a stunning tropical vining plant prized for its large, thick leaves adorned with beautiful silvery splashes and markings. Its broad, glossy foliage features a striking combination of deep green and shimmering silver, creating an elegant, almost metallic appearance. The substantial leaves and bold texture give this Hoya a dramatic presence, making it an excellent choice for hanging baskets, climbing trellises, and decorative plant displays. With its attractive foliage and relatively easy care, 'Silver' is a wonderful addition to any Hoya collection.
Botanically known as Hoya latifolia, this species belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia. 'Silver' is a horticultural trade designation used for plants displaying prominent silver splashing or mottling on their leaves rather than a formally established botanical variety. This species has also been sold under the name Hoya macrophylla in the horticultural trade. The amount and pattern of silver coloration can vary from leaf to leaf, making each plant unique.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its attractive silver markings and encourage healthy growth. Gentle morning sunlight can be beneficial, while prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun may scorch the leaves. Adequate light may also encourage flowering in mature plants.
Watering: Allow the growing medium to dry out mostly between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Its thick, succulent-like leaves store some moisture, making it more tolerant of occasional underwatering than consistently wet soil. Reduce watering during cooler months.
Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining Hoya mix containing orchid bark, perlite, coco chips, and a small amount of quality potting soil. Excellent drainage and airflow around the roots are essential for healthy growth.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65–85°F and appreciates moderate to high humidity, ideally 50–70%. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F. Good airflow is important, especially in humid environments.
Growth Habit: A climbing or trailing tropical vine that produces large, thick, oval to rounded leaves with attractive silver splashing. Its sturdy stems can be trained around a trellis or allowed to cascade from a hanging planter. Mature plants may produce clusters of small, star-shaped, fragrant flowers. Avoid removing old flower spurs, as Hoyas can bloom repeatedly from the same structures.
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Hoyas are widely regarded as pet-friendly houseplants, although species-specific toxicity information for Hoya latifolia is limited. Consuming large amounts of plant material may still cause mild gastrointestinal upset, so it is best to discourage pets from chewing on the foliage.
