Hoya Obovata Splash
Hoya Obovata Splash is a distinctive Hoya prized for its large, thick, rounded leaves decorated with irregular silver flecks and splashes. The succulent-like foliage is typically deep green with varying amounts of silver, meaning every leaf can develop a slightly different pattern. As the plant matures, its long vines create an impressive trailing or climbing display, and established plants can produce clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers.
The plant is commonly sold as Hoya obovata ‘Splash’ or Hoya obovata Splash. It is a silver-splashed form of Hoya obovata, a naturally occurring Hoya species native to parts of tropical Asia. The term “Splash” describes the silver patterning on the foliage rather than a separate species, and the amount of silver can vary considerably from leaf to leaf.
Care
Hoya Obovata Splash does best in bright, indirect light and can benefit from some gentle morning or late-afternoon direct sunlight. Brighter conditions can encourage compact growth, attractive foliage, and flowering. Avoid prolonged intense sunlight, particularly without gradual acclimation.
Allow the upper portion of the potting mix to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Its thick, fleshy leaves store moisture, making it more tolerant of brief periods of dryness than constantly wet conditions. Avoid keeping the roots soggy or waterlogged.
Use a chunky, well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing orchid bark, perlite or pumice, and coco coir or quality houseplant soil works well. The roots benefit from excellent airflow and should not remain in dense, saturated soil.
Hoya Obovata Splash prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. It adapts well to average household humidity, although additional humidity can encourage vigorous growth. Good airflow is particularly important when growing in humid conditions.
This Hoya develops a climbing or trailing growth habit and can produce long searching vines as it matures. It can be trained around a trellis or other support or allowed to cascade from a hanging container. Mature plants can produce rounded clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers, typically pale pink to nearly white with darker pink or reddish centers. Avoid removing the flower peduncles after blooming, as Hoyas can produce flowers repeatedly from the same structures.
Pet Safety
Hoya Obovata Splash is generally considered pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs. As with any houseplant, consuming a large amount of plant material may still cause mild digestive upset, so discouraging pets from chewing on the foliage is recommended.
