Hoya Phuwuaensis Splash
Hoya Phuwuaensis Splash is a distinctive collector Hoya prized for its thick, elongated green leaves decorated with irregular silver splashes and speckling. The foliage has a substantial, succulent-like texture, while the silver markings can vary from scattered flecks to heavier splashing across the leaf surface. As the plant matures, its vines create an attractive climbing or trailing display and can eventually produce clusters of characteristic Hoya flowers.
The proper botanical name is Hoya phuwuaensis, with silver-marked plants commonly sold as Hoya phuwuaensis Splash. The species is native to Thailand, and its name refers to Phu Wua, the locality associated with the species. “Splash” is a horticultural description for the silver markings rather than a separate species, and the amount of silver can vary considerably between individual leaves and plants.
Care
Hoya Phuwuaensis Splash does best in bright, indirect light and can benefit from some gentle morning or late-afternoon direct sunlight. Good light encourages compact growth and attractive foliage while supporting eventual flowering. Avoid prolonged intense direct sunlight, especially without gradual acclimation.
Allow the upper portion of the potting mix to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Its relatively thick foliage provides some drought tolerance, but the plant should not be left completely dry for extended periods during active growth. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet or waterlogged.
Use a chunky, airy and well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing orchid bark, perlite or pumice, and coco coir or quality houseplant soil works well. Excellent airflow around the roots helps replicate the conditions experienced by epiphytic Hoyas in nature.
Hoya Phuwuaensis Splash prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. It can adapt to typical household conditions, but additional humidity may encourage vigorous growth. Good airflow is especially important when humidity is high.
This Hoya develops a climbing and vining growth habit and benefits from a trellis or similar support, although its vines can also be allowed to trail. Mature plants can produce clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers. Avoid removing old flower peduncles after blooming, as Hoyas can produce flowers repeatedly from the same structures.
Pet Safety
Hoya Phuwuaensis Splash is generally considered pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs. As with any houseplant, consuming a large amount of foliage may still cause mild digestive upset, so discouraging pets from chewing on the plant is recommended.
