Hoya verticillata 'Heart Silver' is a beautiful tropical vining plant prized for its thick, glossy leaves decorated with shimmering silver splashes and markings. Its attractive foliage features rich green tones accented by silvery patterns that catch the light, giving each leaf a distinctive appearance. With its elegant trailing or climbing growth habit and relatively easy care, 'Heart Silver' makes a wonderful addition to hanging baskets, shelves, trellises, and Hoya collections. Mature plants may also reward growers with clusters of delicate, star-shaped flowers.
Botanically known as Hoya verticillata, this species belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is native to parts of tropical Asia. 'Heart Silver' is a horticultural trade name used for silver-splashed plants with attractive, often heart-shaped foliage. The amount and pattern of silver coloration can vary between individual plants and new leaves.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its attractive silver markings and encourage healthy growth. Gentle morning sunlight is beneficial, while prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun may scorch the leaves. Adequate light can also encourage flowering in mature plants.
Watering: Allow the soil to dry out mostly between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Its thick, succulent-like leaves store some moisture, making it more tolerant of occasional underwatering than consistently wet soil. Reduce watering during cooler months.
Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining Hoya mix containing orchid bark, perlite, coco chips, and a small amount of quality potting soil. Excellent drainage and airflow around the roots are essential for healthy growth.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65–85°F and appreciates moderate to high humidity, ideally 50–70%. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F. Good airflow is important, especially in humid environments.
Growth Habit: A climbing or trailing tropical vine that produces thick, glossy leaves with beautiful silver splashing. Its flexible stems can be trained around a trellis or allowed to cascade naturally from a hanging planter. Mature plants may produce clusters of small, fragrant, star-shaped flowers. Avoid removing old flower spurs, as Hoyas can bloom repeatedly from the same structures.
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Hoyas are widely regarded as pet-friendly houseplants. However, chewing on or consuming large amounts of plant material may still cause mild gastrointestinal upset, so it is best to discourage pets from eating the foliage.
