Monstera Bulbasaur
Monstera Bulbasaur is a rare collector Monstera prized for its distinctive camouflage-like variegation in shades of deep green, mint, light green, cream, and white. Rather than producing the large solid-white sections commonly associated with Monstera Albo, Bulbasaur develops mottled, speckled, and marbled coloration across the leaf, creating an almost pixelated pattern. As the plant matures, its leaves become larger and develop the dramatic splits and interior fenestrations characteristic of Monstera deliciosa.
The plant is commonly sold as Monstera deliciosa ‘Bulbasaur’. It is a variegated form of Monstera deliciosa that originated as a naturally occurring sport or mutation. Its playful name comes from the green, mottled appearance of the Pokémon character Bulbasaur. The amount and placement of variegation can vary from leaf to leaf, making each new leaf slightly different from the last.
Care
Monstera Bulbasaur does best in bright, indirect light. Because of its variegation, it benefits from brighter conditions than a standard green Monstera deliciosa. Good light helps support healthy growth and maintain its distinctive mint, cream, and green patterning. Gentle morning sun can be beneficial, but protect the lighter portions of the leaves from intense afternoon sunlight, which can cause scorching.
Water when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Avoid keeping the potting mix constantly wet, as Monsteras are susceptible to root rot when their roots remain waterlogged.
Use a well-draining, chunky aroid potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing houseplant soil or coco coir, orchid bark, perlite or pumice, and other coarse materials provides the combination of moisture retention and airflow that Monstera roots prefer.
Monstera Bulbasaur prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Average household humidity is generally adequate, although additional humidity can help support larger, healthier foliage. Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
This plant has a climbing growth habit and benefits greatly from a moss pole, plank, or other sturdy vertical support. Allowing the plant to climb encourages larger leaves and increasingly dramatic fenestrations as it matures. Its variegation will naturally vary between leaves, so differences in the amount of mint, cream, white, and green are normal.
Pet Safety
Monstera Bulbasaur is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Like other Monsteras, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause intense irritation of the mouth, tongue, and lips, along with drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
