Peperomia Caperata Rosso is a striking, compact houseplant prized for its deep green, deeply ridged leaves and vibrant ruby-red undersides. Its narrow, pointed foliage grows in a dense, rosette-like arrangement, creating a beautiful contrast between the glossy green upper surfaces and rich red coloring beneath. With its sculptural appearance and manageable size, this Peperomia is an excellent choice for desks, shelves, tabletops, and decorative planters.
Commonly sold as Peperomia caperata ‘Rosso’, this plant is also known as Peperomia ‘Eden Rosso’ or Emerald Ripple Peperomia Rosso. It is a cultivated hybrid associated with the Ripple Peperomia group and is especially recognized for its elongated, textured foliage and colorful undersides. Unlike many traditional Peperomia caperata varieties with rounded, heart-shaped leaves, Rosso develops a more pointed, architectural appearance.
Peperomia Caperata Rosso does best in bright, indirect light. Good filtered light helps maintain its rich green foliage and vibrant red undersides while encouraging healthy, compact growth. It can tolerate medium light, although growth may slow in darker conditions. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Water when the top inch or two of soil feels dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Its slightly succulent leaves and stems store some moisture, making it more tolerant of brief periods of dryness than constantly wet soil. Avoid overwatering, as prolonged moisture around the roots can lead to root rot.
Use a light, airy, and well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A combination of quality houseplant soil or coco coir, perlite or pumice, and fine orchid bark works well. The roots appreciate good airflow and a potting mix that retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged.
Peperomia Caperata Rosso prefers warm temperatures and moderate humidity. It adapts well to average household humidity and generally does not require additional humidity to thrive. Protect it from cold drafts, sudden temperature changes, and prolonged exposure to cool conditions.
This plant develops a compact, rosette-like growth habit, with its pointed leaves radiating outward from the center of the plant. It generally stays relatively small, making it ideal for limited spaces. Mature plants may produce slender, upright flower spikes that resemble tiny rat tails. These flowers are characteristic of Peperomias and are typically less showy than the colorful foliage.
Remove damaged or aging leaves as needed to maintain a tidy appearance. Peperomia Rosso can also be propagated through stem or leaf cuttings, making it a rewarding plant to grow and share.
Peperomia Caperata Rosso is generally considered pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs. As with any houseplant, consuming large amounts of foliage may still cause mild digestive upset, so discouraging pets from chewing on the plant is recommended.
