Philodendron 'Burgundy Princess' is a beautiful tropical houseplant prized for its rich, dark foliage and dramatic burgundy coloration. Its glossy, elongated leaves display a striking combination of deep green, reddish-purple, and wine-colored tones, creating a sophisticated appearance that stands out among traditional houseplants. New growth may emerge with warm red or burgundy hues before gradually deepening as the leaves mature. With its elegant foliage and upright growth habit, 'Burgundy Princess' makes an eye-catching addition to plant shelves, decorative displays, and collections of unusual Philodendrons.
Commonly sold as Philodendron 'Burgundy Princess', this plant is generally associated with the Philodendron erubescens group, which includes several popular cultivars known for their colorful foliage and reddish stems. 'Burgundy Princess' is a horticultural trade name, and its precise cultivar identity may vary between growers. It is valued primarily for its dark foliage and burgundy tones rather than the prominent pink variegation associated with Philodendron 'Pink Princess'.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth and maintain its rich burgundy coloration. Can tolerate medium light conditions, although growth may slow and foliage may appear darker green. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Philodendrons prefer lightly moist soil during active growth but are sensitive to consistently soggy conditions. Reduce watering during cooler months.
Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix containing orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, and quality potting soil. The mixture should retain some moisture while providing excellent airflow around the roots.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65–85°F and appreciates moderate to high humidity, ideally 50–70%. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F. Consistent humidity encourages healthy leaf development and helps prevent crispy edges.
Growth Habit: An upright to climbing tropical Philodendron that produces elongated, glossy leaves in shades of deep green, burgundy, and reddish-purple. New foliage may emerge with stronger red tones before gradually darkening as it matures. As the plant grows, its stems may benefit from a moss pole, plank, or trellis for support. With favorable conditions, it can reach several feet tall indoors. Occasional pruning can help maintain a compact, attractive shape.
Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Philodendrons contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep this plant out of reach of curious pets.
