Philodendron Dark Billie is a dramatic collector Philodendron prized for its long, narrow foliage and exceptionally dark coloration. Its elongated leaves can mature into deep green, blue-green, or nearly black-green shades, often accompanied by contrasting reddish to burgundy petioles. New growth may emerge with bronze or reddish tones before gradually darkening, giving the plant an especially bold appearance as it matures.
Commonly sold as Philodendron ‘Dark Billie’, this plant is associated with Philodendron billietiae and has been selected or bred for darker foliage and contrasting coloration. Dark Billie is primarily a horticultural or collector trade name, so appearance can vary somewhat between individual plants and growers.
Philodendron Dark Billie does best in bright, indirect light. Plenty of filtered light encourages strong growth, larger foliage, and richer coloration. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Water when the top inch or two of soil feels dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Keep the plant relatively evenly hydrated during active growth without allowing the potting mix to remain constantly wet or soggy.
Use a chunky, airy, and well-draining aroid mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir with orchid bark, perlite, pumice, and other coarse amendments works well. Good airflow around the roots helps reduce the risk of root rot.
Philodendron Dark Billie prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. It can adapt to typical household conditions, although increased humidity can encourage larger, healthier foliage. Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
This Philodendron develops a climbing growth habit and benefits from a moss pole, plank, or other sturdy vertical support. Providing support can encourage progressively larger leaves and a more mature appearance. Its long foliage can eventually require considerable horizontal space even when the plant is trained vertically.
Philodendron Dark Billie is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Like other Philodendrons, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation and burning of the mouth, tongue, and lips, along with drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
