Philodendron Pluto Mint is a distinctive collector Philodendron prized for its heavily textured foliage and unusual mint-toned coloration. Its deeply sculpted, serrated leaves can display a mixture of green, pale green, mint, cream, and yellow-green shades, while new growth may emerge with warmer bronze or reddish tones before hardening. The combination of irregular variegation and the naturally rugged Pluto leaf shape gives each new leaf a dramatically different appearance.
Commonly sold as Philodendron ‘Pluto Mint’ or Mint Pluto, this plant is a variegated selection associated with Philodendron ‘Pluto’. Pluto is also closely connected with the well-known Caramel Marble line, but names within this group can be used inconsistently in the collector plant trade. “Mint” is primarily used to describe plants displaying pale green and mint-colored variegation rather than identifying a separate botanical species.
Philodendron Pluto Mint does best in bright, indirect light. Good filtered light is particularly important for maintaining healthy variegated growth because the mint, cream, and pale portions of the leaves contain less chlorophyll. Avoid prolonged intense direct sunlight, which can scorch the lighter areas of the foliage.
Water when the top 1–2 inches of the potting mix begin to dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Keep watering relatively consistent during active growth, but avoid constantly wet soil. Allowing the upper portion of the mix to dry between waterings helps reduce the risk of root problems.
Use a chunky, airy, and fast-draining aroid mix. Orchid bark, coco chips or coir, perlite, pumice, and a smaller amount of quality potting mix provide a good combination of drainage, moisture retention, and airflow around the roots.
Philodendron Pluto Mint prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Additional humidity can help new leaves expand properly, especially as they become larger and more heavily textured. Good airflow is equally important, and the plant should be protected from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
This Philodendron develops a compact, upright to self-heading growth habit rather than producing long trailing vines. New leaves emerge from the central growth point and become progressively larger and more deeply sculpted as the plant matures. Variegation can fluctuate considerably between leaves, so individual plants may produce everything from predominantly green foliage to heavily mint-variegated growth.
Philodendron Pluto Mint is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested. Like other Philodendrons, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation of the mouth, tongue, and throat, along with drooling, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
