Philodendron Silver Stripe
Philodendron Silver Stripe is a beautiful trailing and climbing houseplant known for its heart-shaped green leaves accented with creamy white, lime green, and silvery variegation through the center. Its layered coloring gives the foliage a softer, more intricate appearance than a standard Heartleaf Philodendron. Its easy-going nature and attractive vines make it a great choice for shelves, hanging baskets, trellises, and bright indoor spaces.
The proper name is commonly listed as Philodendron hederaceum ‘Silver Stripe’. It is closely related to other variegated Heartleaf Philodendrons such as Philodendron ‘Brasil’, ‘Cream Splash’, and ‘Rio’, but Silver Stripe is recognized for the combination of cream, light green, and silvery tones running through the center of its leaves.
Care
Philodendron Silver Stripe does best in medium to bright, indirect light. Brighter filtered light helps maintain its cream and silver variegation and encourages fuller growth. It can tolerate medium light, but the variegation may become less pronounced. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the lighter portions of the leaves.
Water thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil feels dry and allow excess water to drain. Philodendrons prefer lightly moist soil during active growth but do not like sitting in wet soil, so avoid watering too frequently.
Use a well-draining, chunky potting mix and a pot with drainage. A mixture containing houseplant soil, orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir works well and provides a good balance of moisture retention and airflow around the roots.
Philodendron Silver Stripe prefers warm temperatures and moderate humidity. It adapts well to average household conditions but appreciates additional humidity when available. Keep it away from cold drafts, heating vents, and air conditioning.
This plant has a vining and climbing growth habit and can be allowed to trail from a shelf or hanging basket or trained onto a moss pole, trellis, or other support. Regular pruning can encourage a fuller appearance, while allowing the plant to climb can encourage larger leaves as it matures.
Pet Safety
Philodendron Silver Stripe is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Like other Philodendrons, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract. Keep it away from pets and small children.
