Philodendron 'Summer Glory' is a beautiful tropical houseplant known for its large, heart-shaped leaves and stunning color transformation as new foliage matures. Fresh leaves emerge in warm shades of copper, bronze, and reddish-orange before gradually transitioning to a rich, glossy green. This colorful progression creates a striking contrast between new and mature foliage, giving the plant a vibrant, ever-changing appearance. With its broad leaves, attractive red-toned stems, and lush growth habit, 'Summer Glory' brings a bold tropical feel to any indoor plant collection.
Philodendron 'Summer Glory' is a cultivated hybrid commonly described as a cross between Philodendron gloriosum and a Philodendron hybrid from the McColley's group. It combines the broad, attractive foliage associated with P. gloriosum with the colorful emerging leaves of its other parent. Unlike many climbing Philodendrons, 'Summer Glory' has a more self-heading, spreading growth habit, making it an excellent choice for tabletops, plant stands, and larger floor displays as it matures.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth and vibrant coloration in new leaves. Can tolerate medium light conditions, although growth may slow and emerging foliage may display less intense color. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves.
Watering: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. 'Summer Glory' prefers lightly moist soil during active growth but is sensitive to consistently soggy conditions. Reduce watering during cooler months.
Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix containing orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, and quality potting soil. The mixture should retain some moisture while allowing excellent airflow around the roots.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65–85°F and appreciates moderate to high humidity, ideally 50–70%. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F. Consistent humidity helps encourage healthy leaf development and smooth unfurling of new foliage.
Growth Habit: A self-heading to spreading tropical Philodendron that produces large, heart-shaped leaves on sturdy petioles. New growth emerges in beautiful coppery-red and bronze tones before gradually maturing to deep green. Unlike climbing varieties, 'Summer Glory' typically grows outward from a central base and does not require a moss pole. As it matures, it can develop an impressive, full appearance with leaves reaching a foot or more in length under favorable conditions. Give it room to spread and rotate occasionally for balanced growth.
Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Philodendrons contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep this plant out of reach of curious pets.
