Variegated Silver Sword Philodendron
Variegated Silver Sword Philodendron is a striking collector aroid prized for its metallic silver-blue foliage splashed and marbled with cream, white, pale yellow, or lighter green variegation. Its elongated, arrow-shaped leaves have a distinctive cool-toned sheen, while each new leaf can develop a completely different variegation pattern. As the plant matures and climbs, its foliage becomes larger and develops the characteristic sword-like shape that gives the plant its common name.
The proper botanical name is Philodendron hastatum ‘Variegata’, commonly sold as Variegated Silver Sword Philodendron or Philodendron Silver Sword Variegated. It is the variegated form of Philodendron hastatum, a species native to southeastern Brazil. The solid-green Silver Sword is already known for its naturally metallic blue-silver foliage, making the additional cream and white variegation especially distinctive.
Care
Variegated Silver Sword Philodendron does best in bright, indirect light. Its variegated portions contain less chlorophyll than the silver-green areas, so plenty of filtered light helps support healthy growth and maintain attractive coloration. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the pale portions of the foliage.
Water when the top inch or two of soil feels dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. It appreciates consistent moisture during active growth but should never remain soggy or waterlogged. Avoid allowing the root system to stay completely dry for extended periods.
Use a well-draining, chunky aroid potting mix in a container with excellent drainage. A combination of quality houseplant soil or coco coir, orchid bark, and perlite or pumice works well. The roots benefit from a balance of moisture retention and plenty of airflow.
Variegated Silver Sword Philodendron prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. It adapts to average household humidity, although additional humidity can encourage larger foliage and help new leaves unfurl properly. Good airflow is beneficial in higher-humidity environments.
This Philodendron develops a strong climbing growth habit and benefits from a moss pole, plank, or other sturdy vertical support. Allowing its aerial roots to attach as it climbs encourages progressively larger and more mature foliage. Variegation can fluctuate between leaves, and occasional pruning may be useful if a stem begins producing consistently all-green growth.
