Portulacaria Mini Jade is a compact, tree-like succulent prized for its small, rounded green leaves and reddish-brown stems. As it matures, the stems become thicker and increasingly woody, creating the appearance of a miniature tree. Its naturally branching growth and ability to tolerate regular pruning make it especially popular for bonsai-style displays.
The proper botanical name is Portulacaria afra, commonly known as Elephant Bush, Dwarf Jade, Mini Jade, or Spekboom. Despite its common name and similar appearance, it is not a true Jade Plant. True Jade is Crassula ovata, an unrelated succulent with different care characteristics and pet-safety considerations.
Portulacaria Mini Jade does best in very bright light with several hours of direct sunlight. Indoors, place it near a bright, sunny window. Strong light encourages dense growth, sturdy stems, and compact spacing between leaves. Gradually acclimate plants to intense direct sunlight to reduce the risk of scorching.
Allow the potting mix to dry completely or almost completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Its fleshy leaves and stems store moisture, allowing the plant to tolerate periods of dryness. Avoid frequent watering or constantly damp soil, which can lead to root and stem rot.
Use a very well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix in a container with drainage. Adding pumice, perlite, lava rock, coarse sand, or other mineral amendments can improve drainage and airflow around the roots.
Portulacaria Mini Jade prefers warm temperatures and low to moderate humidity. Typical household conditions are generally suitable. Protect the plant from freezing temperatures and avoid combining cool conditions with wet soil.
This succulent develops a branching, shrubby, or small tree-like growth habit. It responds extremely well to pruning and can be shaped into compact bonsai-style forms. Pinching or trimming growing tips encourages additional branching and a fuller canopy. Stem cuttings also root readily, making the plant easy to propagate.
Portulacaria afra is generally considered pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs. This is an important difference from the true Jade Plant, Crassula ovata, which is toxic to pets. As with any plant, consuming large amounts of foliage may still cause mild digestive upset.
