Ric Rac Cactus is a unique and eye-catching tropical cactus known for its long, flat, zigzagging stems that resemble a fishbone or ric rac ribbon. Its bright green, deeply notched foliage creates a playful, sculptural appearance that looks especially beautiful cascading from hanging baskets or elevated shelves. Unlike traditional desert cacti, this unusual plant thrives in filtered light and appreciates a little extra humidity. With its distinctive shape and relatively easy care, Ric Rac Cactus is an excellent choice for adding texture and personality to any indoor plant collection.
Botanically known as Disocactus anguliger, and formerly classified as Epiphyllum anguliger, Ric Rac Cactus is an epiphytic cactus native to Mexico. In its natural habitat, it grows on trees in tropical forests rather than in dry desert environments. Mature plants may produce large, fragrant, cream-colored flowers that typically open at night.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but tolerates medium light conditions. Gentle morning sunlight can encourage healthy growth and flowering, while prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun may scorch or discolor the stems.
Watering: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Unlike desert cacti, Ric Rac Cactus prefers more consistent moisture during active growth but should never sit in soggy soil. Reduce watering during cooler months.
Soil: Use a loose, well-draining epiphytic mix containing orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, and quality potting soil. The mixture should retain some moisture while providing plenty of airflow around the roots.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 60–85°F and appreciates moderate to high humidity, ideally 50–70%. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F. Good airflow helps maintain healthy foliage.
Growth Habit: A trailing, epiphytic cactus that produces long, flattened stems with distinctive zigzag edges. Its stems can grow several feet long, making it ideal for hanging baskets and elevated planters. Mature plants may produce large, fragrant, nighttime blooms under favorable conditions.
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Ric Rac Cactus is a pet-friendly option for indoor plant collections. However, chewing on or consuming large amounts of plant material may cause mild gastrointestinal upset, so it is best to discourage pets from eating the stems.
