Variegated Whale Fin Sansevieria
Variegated Whale Fin Sansevieria is a striking collector Snake Plant prized for its enormous paddle-shaped leaves patterned with green, yellow, cream, and lighter variegation. Each thick, leathery leaf can become remarkably broad, giving the plant the distinctive whale-fin silhouette behind its common name. Variegation can appear as broad yellow margins, irregular streaks, marbling, or contrasting sectors, making each leaf unique.
The plant is commonly sold as Sansevieria masoniana ‘Variegata’, Variegated Whale Fin, or Variegated Mason’s Congo. Sansevierias are now botanically classified within the genus Dracaena, so the species is also recognized as Dracaena masoniana. It is native to Central Africa and is naturally a slow-growing plant that spreads through underground rhizomes.
Care
Variegated Whale Fin Sansevieria does best in medium to bright, indirect light and can tolerate some gentle direct sunlight. Because the cream and yellow portions of its foliage contain less chlorophyll, the variegated form benefits from brighter conditions than a completely green Whale Fin. Gradually acclimate the plant before exposing it to stronger direct sunlight to prevent scorching.
Allow the potting mix to dry completely or almost completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain. Its massive succulent leaves and underground rhizomes store significant amounts of moisture, making overwatering a much greater concern than occasional dryness. Reduce watering during cooler months and periods of slower growth.
Use a very well-draining, gritty cactus or succulent potting mix in a container with drainage. Adding pumice, perlite, lava rock, coarse sand, or other mineral amendments can improve drainage and airflow around the roots. Avoid oversized containers or dense soil that remains wet for extended periods.
Variegated Whale Fin prefers warm temperatures and low to moderate humidity. Average household humidity is generally suitable. Protect it from prolonged cold temperatures, particularly when the potting mix is damp.
This plant develops a very slow-growing, upright and rhizomatous growth habit. A young plant may consist of only one or two enormous leaves for an extended period before producing additional growth. New shoots eventually emerge from underground rhizomes and can be left attached to create a larger specimen or carefully divided for propagation. Highly variegated plants may grow especially slowly because their pale foliage contains less chlorophyll.
Pet Safety
Variegated Whale Fin Sansevieria is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Like other Snake Plants, it contains saponins that can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
