Sansevieria White Josephine
Sansevieria White Josephine is a striking collector Snake Plant prized for its upright architectural foliage and dramatic cream-to-white variegation. Its structured leaves combine shades of green with pale ivory, cream, and white markings, creating a bright, high-contrast appearance. The amount and placement of the variegation can differ between leaves, giving each specimen its own distinctive pattern as it matures.
The plant is commonly sold under the horticultural or collector name Sansevieria ‘White Josephine’. Sansevierias are now botanically classified within the genus Dracaena, although the Sansevieria name remains widely used by growers and collectors. White Josephine is primarily circulated under its cultivar or trade name, and plants from different sources may show some variation in leaf shape, patterning, and mature appearance.
Care
Sansevieria White Josephine does best in medium to bright, indirect light and can tolerate some gentle direct sunlight. Because the white and cream portions of its foliage contain less chlorophyll, it benefits from brighter conditions than many completely green Snake Plants. Avoid suddenly exposing the plant to intense direct sunlight, as the pale portions can be especially susceptible to scorching.
Allow the potting mix to dry completely or almost completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain. Its thick foliage and underground rhizomes store moisture, making overwatering a much greater concern than occasional dryness. Reduce watering during cooler months and periods of slower growth.
Use a very well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix in a container with drainage. Adding pumice, perlite, lava rock, coarse sand, or other mineral amendments can improve drainage and provide excellent airflow around the roots. Avoid dense soil that remains wet for extended periods.
Sansevieria White Josephine prefers warm temperatures and low to moderate humidity. Average household humidity is generally suitable. Protect it from prolonged cold temperatures, particularly when the potting mix is damp.
This plant develops a slow-growing, upright and clumping growth habit. New shoots emerge from underground rhizomes and gradually create a fuller specimen. Highly variegated growth may develop more slowly because the pale portions of the foliage contain less chlorophyll. Propagation by carefully dividing established rhizomes and offsets is the best way to preserve the characteristics and variegation of the parent plant.
Pet Safety
Sansevieria White Josephine is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Like other Snake Plants, it contains saponins that can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
