Scindapsus Dark Form is a striking tropical houseplant known for its deep green to nearly black foliage with a rich, velvety appearance. The dark leaves create a dramatic contrast against lighter plants and décor, making it a beautiful choice for collectors, shelves, hanging planters, and trellises. As the plant matures, its leaves can become larger and more impressive when given something to climb.
The plant is commonly sold as Scindapsus ‘Dark Form’, although the exact species or parentage may vary depending on the grower or supplier. The name Dark Form is generally used in the houseplant trade for Scindapsus selections prized for their unusually deep, dark foliage.
Care
Scindapsus Dark Form does best in medium to bright, indirect light. Bright filtered light encourages healthy growth and helps the plant maintain a compact habit. It can tolerate medium light, but growth may be slower. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.
Water thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil feels dry and allow excess water to drain. Scindapsus prefer to dry slightly between waterings and can be sensitive to consistently wet soil. Avoid allowing the plant to sit in standing water.
Use a well-draining, chunky potting mix and a pot with drainage. A mixture containing houseplant soil, orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir works well and provides a good balance of moisture retention and airflow around the roots.
Scindapsus Dark Form prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. It can adapt to average household humidity, but additional humidity can encourage larger, healthier foliage. Keep it away from cold drafts, heating vents, and sudden temperature changes.
This plant has a vining and climbing growth habit. It can be allowed to trail from a shelf or hanging basket or trained onto a moss pole, plank, or trellis. Providing support can encourage larger leaves and more mature growth over time.
Pet Safety
Scindapsus plants are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. They contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract. Keep them away from pets and small children.
