ZZ Plant is a popular tropical houseplant prized for its glossy, deep green leaves, upright growth habit, and exceptional ease of care. Its thick, waxy foliage grows along sturdy, arching stems, creating a lush, polished appearance that works beautifully in homes, offices, and indoor plant collections. Known for its ability to tolerate lower light and infrequent watering, the ZZ Plant is an excellent choice for beginners or anyone looking for an attractive, low-maintenance houseplant.
The proper botanical name is Zamioculcas zamiifolia, although it is commonly called ZZ Plant, Zanzibar Gem, or Eternity Plant. Native to eastern Africa, this species is adapted to periods of drought and stores water in its thick underground rhizomes and fleshy stems. Despite its palm-like appearance, it belongs to the Araceae family, making it a relative of Philodendrons, Monsteras, and other aroids.
ZZ Plant grows best in medium to bright, indirect light, although it is especially well known for tolerating lower-light conditions. Brighter filtered light encourages stronger growth and fuller foliage, while lower light generally results in slower growth. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Allow the potting mix to dry completely or almost completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Its underground rhizomes store moisture, making it highly drought tolerant. Overwatering is one of the most common problems with ZZ Plants and can lead to yellowing leaves, soft stems, and rhizome rot.
Use a well-draining, airy potting mix in a container with drainage. A combination of quality houseplant soil, perlite or pumice, and orchid bark works well. Adding cactus or succulent potting mix can also improve drainage and help prevent excess moisture from collecting around the roots.
ZZ Plant prefers warm temperatures and average household humidity. It adapts well to typical indoor environments and does not require additional humidity to thrive. Protect it from cold drafts and prolonged exposure to low temperatures.
This plant develops a slow-growing, upright, clumping growth habit, producing new stems directly from its underground rhizomes. Mature plants can reach several feet tall, with gracefully arching stems and dense, glossy foliage. New growth often emerges a lighter, brighter green before gradually darkening as the leaves mature.
ZZ Plants generally prefer to remain slightly snug in their containers and only need repotting when their rhizomes become crowded. They can be propagated through division, stem cuttings, or individual leaf cuttings, although propagation can be slow.
ZZ Plant is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. It contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation of the mouth, tongue, and lips, along with drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. The plant's sap may also irritate sensitive skin. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
