ZZ Plant 'Chameleon' is a stunning tropical houseplant known for its vibrant, color-changing foliage and glossy, upright leaves. Unlike traditional ZZ Plants, 'Chameleon' produces brilliant golden-yellow to lime-green new growth that gradually transitions into rich, deep green as the leaves mature. This beautiful mix of colors creates a striking, layered appearance that brings brightness and texture to any indoor space. With its architectural growth habit, exceptional drought tolerance, and easygoing nature, 'Chameleon' is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced plant collectors.
Botanically known as Zamioculcas zamiifolia 'Chameleon', this cultivated variety belongs to the Araceae family and originates from a species native to eastern Africa. Like other ZZ Plants, it develops thick underground rhizomes that store water, allowing it to tolerate periods of drought. Its distinctive golden new growth makes it especially popular among collectors looking for a colorful alternative to the classic ZZ Plant.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage vibrant golden-yellow new growth and healthy foliage. Can tolerate medium to low light conditions, although growth may slow and new leaves may display less intense coloration. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Its thick underground rhizomes store moisture, making it highly drought-tolerant. Overwatering is one of the most common causes of root rot. Reduce watering during cooler months.
Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix amended with perlite, pumice, or orchid bark. A loose, airy mixture helps prevent excess moisture from collecting around the roots and rhizomes.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65–85°F and adapts well to average household humidity. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F. No additional humidity is typically necessary.
Growth Habit: A slow to moderately growing, upright tropical plant that produces thick, glossy leaflets along sturdy, arching stems. New growth emerges in brilliant shades of golden yellow or lime green before gradually deepening to dark green as it matures. Its naturally tidy growth habit makes it an excellent choice for decorative floor planters, desks, and shelves. Mature plants may reach approximately 2–3 feet tall indoors.
Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. ZZ Plants contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep this plant out of reach of curious pets.
