The ZZ Plant 'Dwarf' is a compact version of the classic ZZ Plant, loved for its glossy, deep green leaves and tidy, upright growth habit. Its thick stems and closely spaced leaflets create a lush, sculptural appearance while maintaining a smaller footprint than traditional ZZ varieties. Perfect for desks, shelves, and smaller living spaces, this easygoing houseplant brings a touch of tropical greenery to almost any indoor setting.
Botanically known as Zamioculcas zamiifolia, the ZZ Plant is native to eastern Africa and is prized for its remarkable drought tolerance. Its underground rhizomes store water, allowing it to thrive even when watering is occasionally forgotten. 'Dwarf' is a horticultural trade name used for compact-growing ZZ plants.
Light: Prefers medium to bright, indirect light but tolerates low-light conditions exceptionally well. Growth may slow in lower light. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. Its water-storing rhizomes make it drought-tolerant, and overwatering is one of the most common causes of problems.
Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix amended with perlite, pumice, or orchid bark to promote airflow and prevent excess moisture around the roots.
Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 65–85°F and adapts well to average household humidity. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F.
Growth Habit: A slow-growing, compact tropical plant with thick, upright stems and glossy green leaflets. Its naturally tidy growth habit makes it ideal for smaller spaces. New shoots emerge directly from underground rhizomes and gradually unfurl as they mature.
Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. ZZ Plants contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep this plant out of reach of curious pets.
