ZZ Zenzi
ZZ Zenzi is a compact form of the classic ZZ Plant prized for its thick, tightly spaced leaflets and dense, upright growth. Its glossy, deep green foliage grows along shortened, slightly curved stems, giving the plant a fuller and more sculptural appearance than a standard ZZ Plant. Its naturally compact size makes it especially well suited for desktops, shelves, smaller spaces, and modern indoor displays.
The plant is commonly sold as Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Zenzi’, ZZ Zenzi, or Dwarf ZZ Plant. It is a compact cultivar of Zamioculcas zamiifolia, a species native to eastern Africa. Like the standard ZZ Plant, Zenzi grows from thick underground rhizomes that store water and nutrients, contributing to its excellent drought tolerance.
Care
ZZ Zenzi does best in medium to bright, indirect light, although it can tolerate lower-light conditions. Brighter filtered light generally encourages stronger, denser growth, while lower light may result in considerably slower growth. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.
Allow the potting mix to dry completely or almost completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain. Its thick rhizomes and fleshy foliage store substantial moisture, making overwatering a much greater concern than occasional dryness. Reduce watering during cooler months and periods of slower growth.
Use a well-draining, airy potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir with plenty of perlite, pumice, orchid bark, or other coarse amendments works well. Avoid dense soil that remains wet for extended periods, as prolonged moisture can lead to root and rhizome rot.
ZZ Zenzi prefers warm temperatures and low to moderate humidity. Average household humidity is generally suitable. Protect it from prolonged cold temperatures and cold drafts, particularly when the potting mix is damp.
This plant develops a slow-growing, compact and clumping growth habit. New stems emerge directly from underground rhizomes, gradually creating a dense specimen. Zenzi naturally stays considerably shorter and more compact than a standard ZZ Plant, so very little pruning is required beyond removing damaged or aging stems.
Pet Safety
ZZ Zenzi is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Like other ZZ Plants, it contains calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth and digestive tract, potentially causing drooling, vomiting, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Its sap may also irritate sensitive skin, so washing your hands after pruning or dividing the plant is recommended.
