Acalypha Firetail Chenille Plant is a colorful tropical plant prized for its bright red, fuzzy, tail-like flowers that cascade above lush green foliage. Its unusual blooms resemble tiny chenille caterpillars or fluffy red tassels, creating a playful display of color and texture. With its compact, spreading growth habit and abundant flowering potential, it is an excellent choice for hanging baskets, patio containers, shelves, and bright indoor spaces.
The plant is commonly sold as Acalypha pendula, also known as Firetail Chenille Plant, Dwarf Chenille Plant, or Strawberry Firetails. Plants in the horticultural trade under this name are also identified as Acalypha herzogiana, reflecting a history of botanical naming confusion. It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family and is closely related to the larger Chenille Plant, Acalypha hispida. Unlike its much larger relative, Firetail Chenille Plant maintains a smaller, trailing habit with shorter, fuzzy red flower spikes.
Acalypha Firetail Chenille Plant does best in bright light with some direct sunlight. Indoors, a bright window with gentle morning sun is ideal. Outdoors, it performs well in morning sun or partial shade, although established plants can tolerate stronger sunlight when provided with adequate moisture. Good light is especially important for encouraging abundant flowering.
Water when the top inch of soil begins to feel dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Firetail Chenille Plant prefers consistently moist soil during active growth and flowering but should never remain soggy or waterlogged. Avoid allowing the plant to dry out completely for extended periods, as this can cause wilting, leaf drop, and reduced flowering.
Use a rich, airy, and well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage. A mixture containing quality houseplant soil or coco coir, perlite or pumice, and a small amount of compost works well. The soil should retain enough moisture to support continuous growth while allowing excess water to drain freely.
Acalypha Firetail Chenille Plant prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. It thrives in warm, humid conditions and should be protected from cold drafts and temperatures below approximately 55°F. Good airflow helps maintain healthy foliage, particularly in humid growing environments.
This plant develops a compact, spreading to trailing growth habit, making it particularly attractive in hanging baskets and elevated containers. Its fuzzy red flower spikes can appear repeatedly throughout the warm growing season, especially when the plant receives adequate light, moisture, and nutrients. Regular pinching or light pruning can encourage fuller growth and help maintain a dense, rounded appearance.
During active growth, occasional feeding with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted according to label directions can encourage healthy foliage and continued flowering. Reduce fertilization and watering during cooler months when growth naturally slows.
The pet toxicity of Firetail Chenille Plant has not been well established, so it should not be considered confirmed pet-safe. As a member of the Euphorbiaceae family, it is best to exercise caution around pets and small children. Ingestion of plant material may cause digestive irritation, and contact with damaged plant tissue may irritate sensitive skin.
